Education is the best means to change society better for the future. While education covers the whole spectrum from primary to secondary and beyond, higher education at university level is most important in supplying skilled human resources in the present times. The need for skills has increased dramatically in recent years due to faster changes in technology and rising competition from all over the world.Known as globalization the process has been opening opportunities for human resources to participate in economic activities and produce goods and services that are sold all over the world at competitive prices. In the areas of production many firms are locating and relocating in hitherto unknown places, particularly in South East Asia, China and India. One New York Times award -winning columnists, Thomas L. Friedman has covered the emerging global trends in a book titled, The World is Flat (national best seller 2005-6). The RMG industry of Bangladesh is an example of how the process works to the benefits of millions who are employed in Bangladesh and consumers in North America, EU countries and others. Another example is the ICT industry in India that has been linking skilled human resources in a developing country to the sophisticated ICT industry in the USA with back offices and research projects located in Bangalore and in the outskirts of New Delhi. Beginning of such employment opportunities has also been made here in Bangladesh by the software industry. Increasingly national borders are becoming less and less important for national development .

The skills that are essential to participate in the process of global industry and trade have been identified as proficiency in English language and the new language of computer and communication. Besides language of communication the “new jobs” require some capacity in problem solving (thinking outside the boxes as it is called) as the nature of the jobs changes over time. The older methods in rot memorizing are not useful these days. Unfortunately our education system ingeneral is yet to change to the new realities.Private University such as Northern University Bangladesh is committed to the spread of education for the youths in selected disciplines keeping in view the skill intensity in higher education as mentioned above. It may be mentioned that NUB is one of the first university in the private sector to join Microsoft Bangladesh in offering computer literacy training to high school teachers and establish an IT academy in Dhaka. Northern International Medical College & Hospital and Northern College are NUB’s sister institutions.

A country with 140 million population with limited natural resources there is no alternative to higher education to sustain moderate to high growth rates in national income and attain the status of a lower middle- income nation by 2020(per capita national income over $1000). Our strategic location in South Asia bordering two fast growing giants, India and China has brought new economic opportunities for the educated youth that was never thought of may be ten-years back. NUB’s vision and mission are designed to create an academic environment conducive to cater to the demand for higher education for the deserving students with moderate means of family incomes. We also offer generous financial aids to the needy. As the Vice Chancellor and also Chairman of the Board of Governors of the IBAT Trust I can assure of the commitment of my other colleagues in the Trust and the administration of academic activities by the Deans and Heads of department in providing the kind of education that is appropriate for the students in the 21st century. I welcome you all to have a look at our facilities and programmes and help us serve you better. Within past Seven years NUB has attracted over Ten thousand five hundred students in its campuses in Dhaka, Rajshahi and Khulna. You can also take part in the march of progress that we have already achieved.
